6+ Great Conferences Any Project Manager Should Attend in 2019

4 min read

When you’re a project manager trying to make your way at work, you might feel like one part lion tamer, one part cat herder. Choosing to take time off to attend a conference might feel like an indulgent perk, but they actually can be super helpful, professionally.

When choosing a conference to attend, see if it offers some key attributes. Not only will this make the argument easier to win when you’re asking your boss to fund your trip, but it also helps you keep your focus on the ultimate goal: getting better at your job.

Key skills for project managers to develop at a conference (look for these types of skills in breakout sessions and agenda items):

  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Negotiation
  • Personal organization
  • Risk management

These soft skills come in handy in a lot of different roles, but project managers use them every day.

Broad Skills Conferences

Change Management 2019

What do PM’s want to do? They want to convince a diverse team that the plan they’re working on is worthwhile and doable. The idea of making a team work towards a common goal on time (and on budget) is the holy grail of every PM’s workday. So how can you make it happen? How can you effect change in your workplace? The Change Management 2019 conference might be a good place to start. Head to Orlando, FL April 28-May 1, 2019 for a weekend of discussion on making yourself heard and making others follow your plan.

Digital Summit Conferences 2019

With multiple locations around the country, you can pick a Digital Summit conference that will be easy to get to (or one that will offer you an escape from your local winter weather). Starting in February in Phoenix and going to May in NYC, you can choose which gathering fits your schedule this year. Keynote speakers differ depending on location, but the topics include everything from the latest in data and analytics to design, conversion and engagement, and innovations in strategy and storytelling. With just two days and over 45 speakers, Digital Summit is like a concentrated dose of learning, networking, and Monday morning motivation.

Running Remote 2019

Ok it’s true that the Running Remote conference is in an absolutely beautiful setting in Bali, Indonesia from June 29-30, 2019. To justify the expense to HR, look at the speakers, which include the GM of Evernote, the Director of Support for Shopify, and more. You can work on making the most of remote teams and digital communications. And hey, it’s on the beach.

Project Manager-Specific Conferences

Agile Alliance Conferences

If you want to get your feet wet or enhance your abilities with Agile engineering, there are several conferences with the nonprofit Agile Alliance that can be great opportunities for growth.

From May 21-25, 2019, Agile researchers, practitioners, thought leaders and more will meet and discuss recent innovations and trends. This conference welcomes those who are new to the Agile work environment for friendly exchanges of ideas.

Join the Agile family. The yearly gathering of Agile professionals of all types will kick off in Washington, D.C. at Agile2019 from August 5-9, 2019. The full range of Agile users from project managers to UX designers and data scientists will be in attendance to network and enhance their skills.

Project Management Institute Conference

Join PMI in Philadelphia, PA from October 5-7, 2019 for their PMI Global Conference and gathering of project management professionals.
